Mark Fausz: Blight on Jefferson Davis Highway is certainly on the top of the list.
Developing a first rate quality of life in order to attract more business development that offers higher paying jobs.
Stop the attacks on schools in the Bermuda District, including the closing of Chester Middle School and impending closures of alternative schools.
Mark Fausz: We are on the edge of losing the enterprise zone along the Jefferson Davis corridor. Positive improvements, support of the Jefferson Davis Association and incentives to develop our historic resources as well as more sustainable business will help attract jobs that are smart and offer higher wages, in turn bringing more revenue into the community. Developing a visitors center at the Falling Creek Ironworks and recreational river access while limiting the development of predatory businesses on the corridor will plant the seed of continued redevelopment.
While some may think that wider highways and interchanges will bring new business, quality of life and good schools are paramount reasons existing businesses thrive and new business locates in a community. Bermuda is the gateway to Chesterfield County and must be attractive while offering community amenities such as a community center, development of the Chesterfield Center for the Arts and developing the Dutch Gap riverfront. Citizens need to feel connected to their community and efforts to create a sense of place must be encouraged and protected.
I will work with the Chesterfield County School Board to bring parity among the districts and to stop the elimination of certain electives, alternative schools and specialty programs, which are the incentives the students need to excel.
Mark Fausz: I have worked as the editor/owner of the Village News in Chester for 14 years and have covered more public meetings, planning commission meetings and committee meetings then I can count. I know the process and understand county challenges. I have also been connected to the citizens of the community for 20 years through community activities and written articles on the importance of our area neighbors. I know the people of Bermuda and feel that, with their help, I can lead our district and county to prosperity. I have helped to form a number of associations and successful events in the Bermuda District that have enabled me to understand how to work with people on committees and boards.
Mark Fausz: I do not intend to raise taxes, in fact, that should be left to the citizens to decide after being informed of the stresses and shortfalls in budget. I believe we should have a public meeting concerning the tax rate before the rate is advertised so the citizens can express their own opinion about increasing or decreasing the tax rate.
I would stress an audit of department spending and space needs, working to consolidate departments and bring about a reduction in leased space outside of the county complex. Fees should also be looked at to determine if the additional fees and service reductions are creating enough revenue to justify their existence.
Mark Fausz: Accessibility - I will implement an interactive website, as part of the county site or independent of, which will allow citizens to vent on issues relative to Chesterfield as a whole, the Bermuda District or their neighborhood. I will communicate through a monthly written address to the citizens of the district exactly what is important and not so important and seek input on each. Town hall type meetings will also be part of an effort to reach out to the public for input and stem apathy.
Meadowville Technology Park - The 1300-acre site should have a percentage of the project zoned to allow for small business to kick start development there. That would open it up to more commercial real estate firms. We can't let the site sit 90 percent vacant running up costs while waiting for the big corporations.
Quality of life incentives - In the Bermuda District we have the opportunity for at least one community center and projects that would bring more pedestrian access to our population centers. Walkability is one of the pieces in the puzzle that will improve our quality of life.
Historic site development and promotion - Develop and promote historic sites. We have some of the richest history in the state in Chesterfield and we are currently not exploiting it.
