Henry L. Marsh III: Working with my colleagues, Virginia can create incentives to entice businesses to locate here and hire Virginians. New businesses will help stimulate the local and state economy. However, to positively affect the economy of our communities, it is imperative that companies employ local citizens and that a disincentive be established to prevent companies from importing and employing the bulk of their workers from other states or foreign countries.
Henry L. Marsh III: In modern times, Virginia has never fully funded public education. Public education has incurred serious budget cuts in recent years—and faces even more—yet, the demands of educating school children has increased substantially. Now is not the time to divert money from traditional public education.
Henry L. Marsh III: My top three goals if reelected:
1. Working with my colleagues in a bipartisan manner to reduce unemployment in the Commonwealth. I will patron and support legislation that provides incentives for companies to hire new employees and to offer training programs for workers who are now unemployed. We will also identify ways to encourage small business start-up and entrepreneurship.
2. Reintroducing a bill that was killed in a House of Delegates subcommittee to conduct a one-year study on the impact of the recession on families, especially school-age children. The recession is creating devastating effects on residents in urban and rural areas. Recently released reports detail alarming statistics concerning the number of people living in poverty. The findings and data generated by my bill will enable the General Assembly to address this crucial problem.
3. Increasing public safety and reducing re-incarceration and recidivism rates for juvenile and adult offenders. I am co-chair of a committee that is looking at a data-driven approach to reduce corrections spending and reinvest savings in strategies that can decrease crime and strengthen neighborhoods.
Henry L. Marsh III: I am Henry L. Marsh, III and since 1992, have proudly and diligently represented the 16th Senate District that encompasses the cities of Petersburg and Hopewell, parts of the counties of Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Prince George and parts of the City of Richmond. I care deeply about my constituents and have never wavered in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of my elected office.
By permitting me to represent them as Senator in the Virginia General Assembly for 20 years, the citizens of the 16th District have bestowed upon me the highest honor one can receive. I am accessible to my constituents and my staff and I respond without delay to calls concerning legislative matters and those seeking assistance for problems with state agencies.
As a legislator and civil rights attorney, I have consistently been involved in creating a just society for all Virginians. I am pleased with the progress that has been made in several areas. However, many difficult challenges remain. I believe I am particularly equipped to lead the citizens of the 16th District in the effort to overcome these challenges.
As an experienced legislator, I effectively and efficiently navigate through the legislative process to get real results. I am Chairman of Senate Courts of Justice and serve on other key committees such as Senate Finance, Local Government, Transportation and Rules. As a member of these committees, I am able to shepherd legislation successfully through the General Assembly.
